Key Highlights
- Positioning should shape acquisition before media spend begins. Clear target customers and service priorities give the website, search campaigns and messaging a more useful job.
- Paid and organic search shouldn’t be judged by the same timeline. Paid search can capture existing demand quickly, while SEO builds visibility that can compound over time.
- Reputation is part of market entry. For a newer company competing with established providers, reviews can reduce perceived risk before a prospect ever makes contact.
- Conversion data is more useful than traffic growth on its own. Calls, tracked conversions and response rates show whether visibility is turning into real customer activity.
- Lead generation can expose the next constraint in the business. More inquiries create pressure on follow-up, staffing and service capacity, so growth planning can’t stop at acquisition.
- A growth partner should adjust as the business changes. The work may begin with branding and demand generation, then expand into measurement, recruitment and other priorities as new bottlenecks appear.
Launching a new business means starting without the advantages established companies already have: brand recognition, customer reviews, search visibility and a steady source of inbound demand.
When Power Surge Electric launched in Ottawa, it needed to establish credibility quickly, reach both residential and commercial customers, and create a reliable source of new inquiries.
Power Surge worked with WSI Consultant Mark Jamieson and the WSI eStrategies team from the company’s launch, giving WSI responsibility for both the brand foundation and the digital program designed to generate demand.
The work began with positioning and brand development, then expanded into the website, SEO, Google Ads, reputation management, lead tracking and recruitment marketing.
Within Power Surge’s first year in market, WSI’s coordinated program generated 733 tracked conversions and helped establish a steady source of new business inquiries.
The Growth Challenge: Building Trust and Demand as a New Business
Power Surge Electric is an Ottawa electrical contractor serving residential and commercial customers, with services ranging from emergency electrical work and repairs to installations, upgrades and ongoing maintenance.
When the company launched, it was entering a market where established contractors already had stronger recognition, customer relationships, reviews and positions in Google Search. Power Surge needed to give homeowners, property managers and commercial buyers enough information to find the company, assess its capabilities and feel confident making contact.
Power Surge also needed a steady flow of qualified inquiries. If the marketing worked, the company would have to add licensed electricians and operating capacity quickly enough to serve the new business.
How WSI Aligned Digital Marketing With Power Surge’s Growth Goals
WSI began with a Brand Strategy Workshop to define Power Surge’s positioning, target customers and competitive differentiation. That work informed the new logo, visual identity and branded vehicle wraps.
Starting with the company’s market position gave the website and campaigns a clearer job. Power Surge needed to appeal to homeowners looking for an electrician while also building credibility with commercial buyers responsible for properties where electrical problems could interrupt day-to-day operations.
WSI then built the website, search campaigns, reputation program and lead tracking around those different buying situations.
The Website Gave Different Customers a Clearer Route to the Right Service
Power Surge’s website separated its commercial, emergency and residential services so visitors could quickly get to information relevant to their needs.
Someone dealing with an urgent electrical problem may be ready to call immediately. A commercial property manager may spend more time checking services and assessing whether a contractor appears equipped for the work.
The site gave both types of visitors clear ways to make contact. An AI-enabled chatbot supported lead capture, and WSI set up analytics to track how people found Power Surge and what they did once they arrived.
SEO and Google Ads Addressed Two Different Search Needs
Power Surge needed customers quickly, but it also needed to build a lasting presence in Google Search.
Google Ads put the company in front of people already searching for electrical services and became an important source of calls during the launch period.
At the same time, WSI used SEO to help Power Surge appear in unpaid Google results for commercial and emergency electrical searches.
Paid search gave Power Surge immediate access to active demand while SEO began building another source of search visibility that didn’t depend on every visit coming through an ad.
Customer Reviews Helped Power Surge Compete on Credibility
When someone searched Google for an electrician in Ottawa, Power Surge could appear alongside contractors that had been operating in the market much longer.
WSI put a reputation management program in place to help Power Surge collect customer reviews and build a five-star presence. For prospective customers, including commercial buyers with no previous relationship with the company, those reviews provided independent evidence that Power Surge could be trusted with the work.
Lead Tracking and Recruitment Connected Marketing With Operational Growth
WSI also connected marketing automation and CRM tools to the program so inquiries could be tracked and followed up.
As customer demand increased, staffing became the next growth constraint. Power Surge needed enough licensed electricians to serve the work coming in, so WSI expanded the program into recruitment marketing. Hiring and customer acquisition became part of the same growth plan.
Business Results: 733 Conversions and the Capacity to Serve More Customers
Within Power Surge’s first year in market, the company moved from having no established digital presence to generating measurable customer activity online.
Results included:
- 733 tracked conversions, including 413 answered Google Ads calls
- 94% answer rate on those Google Ads calls
- 12.3% Google Ads conversion rate
Paid search also generated commercial opportunities. Power Surge secured work with a nationally recognized hospitality brand and established relationships in the commercial property management sector. For a new contractor entering an established market, those wins provided evidence that Power Surge was gaining credibility with commercial buyers as well as residential customers.
The impact was also visible inside the operation. As demand increased, Power Surge added licensed electricians, expanded its fleet of branded service vehicles and eventually moved into a larger facility.
Power Surge described the relationship with WSI this way:
“Great team to work with! They truly take the time to work with their clients and provide professional insight on current marketing and business trends. They’ve helped grow my business from the start, and I would not be where I’m at without their expertise! I highly recommend the entire WSI team!”
What Power Surge’s Growth Shows About Building Demand
Power Surge’s results came from a sequence of decisions, and the order mattered. WSI first defined the customers and work the business wanted to attract, gave paid and organic search different jobs, then expanded into lead follow-up and recruitment as demand grew.
Focus on the Customers the Business Wants to Attract
Power Surge defined the customers and types of work it wanted to grow before media spend began. That decision shaped the website, search strategy and messaging that followed.
For homeowners, the priority was a clear route to emergency and residential services. Commercial buyers needed enough information to assess whether Power Surge could handle larger or ongoing work.
That focus gave the marketing a commercial purpose from the start: attract the kinds of customers and jobs the business wanted to build around.
Give Paid and Organic Search Different Jobs
Power Surge needed immediate access to people already searching for electrical services, but it also needed to build a longer-term presence in search.
WSI used Google Ads to capture active demand while SEO built visibility for commercial and emergency electrical searches over time.
The two channels supported different parts of the growth plan. Paid search helped generate inquiries quickly, while organic visibility gave Power Surge another way to be found as its market presence developed.
Plan for What Happens After the Leads Come In
More inquiries created a new growth constraint. Power Surge needed to respond quickly, keep leads moving and have enough licensed electricians to take on the work.
WSI’s support expanded into lead follow-up and recruitment as those needs grew. Power Surge added licensed electricians, expanded its branded service fleet and eventually moved into a larger facility.
That progression matters because demand generation can expose the next bottleneck in the business. Lead follow-up, recruitment and operating capacity became part of the same growth plan as demand increased.
